Recently, an Influencer in Munich (Germany) decided to do an experiment to find out if the donated clothes are given to people in need or have a different destination. He donated sneakers and put an AirTag to try to track the final destination.

I assume he expected to be given in some institution close to his house, but this didn’t happen. The shoes appeared in a second-hand store in Bosnia-Herzegovina, after a long trip across Europe. That influencer decided to go there and repurchase his own shoes.
So what this history points out is what happens when you give clothes. Many times, these are not given to poor people, and according to the German Red Cross, there are different possible destinations, and some of them could be sold for recycling.
At the end, and in my opinion, this is a business, that could be good for the environment, but still a business. However, if you want to take care of the environment, it is better to sell it by yourself on any available online app or local second-hand store, as you probably will get some money back and also avoid the long trip that these clothes have taken. Here there is a lack of transparency about what they do with the clothes, and it seems that it is hard to confirm which will be the final destination of the given items. If you wanna take care of the environment, the best way is to wear clothes for as long as possible and donate directly to the people that need the most, if possible.

At first, I thought this is by government or some kind of public institute. 🤔🙄
Now I feel more responsible for shopping clothes.. Also I think less clothes less stress!
