The Louvre Museum suddenly closes its doors due to over-whelmed staff. Tourism went too far?

This week, without previous notice, the Louvre Museum staff closed its doors, and it seems that the reason behind this is over-tourism and the lack of the staff and resources to manage the huge amount of visitors. This is becoming a serious problem for most tourist cities in the world, I am Spanish and I know how bad tourism could be.

Over-tourism in the Louvre Museum. AI generated.

Personally, I don’t like to do tourism in tourist hotspots, as most are overcrowded and overpriced. Many times You can see everyone taking the same photo for their Instagram account and just don’t enjoy the visit. Also, I think that is not good for local residents as it could be very annoying if tourists don’t behave well and respect local people, which is not always the case.

A bit of tourism could be good for the local economy, but tourism couldn’t be the only factor that pushes the economy; it is not good for any country, and the existence of house renting for tourists (like Airbnb) could create a lot of problems, like housing prices, which pushes young and local residents out of the cities.

Anyway, I wonder if this is the beginning of a change. Nowadays, it is difficult because of SNSs. Everyone wanna go to the same place, but it seems that more people are getting this tourism and want more authentic and local experiences when travelling abroad. I think that we should control and introduce limits to tourism if we don’t want to destroy our cities and become an urban theme park.

  1. Overtourism became a social problem in many countries. In Barcelona, protests against overtourism again. 🙄😑
