Today is Wednesday, so let’s prepare a new Korean word of the day for studying this week. Today’s word is 속상하다. Today’s word has a bit of a negative meaning that we are going to use more than we want, but it will be useful and we need to know it, so let’s try to memorise it step by step.
속상하다 What does this mean?
속상하다, means to be distressed or to be upset or to be worried about something. It is an emotional condition that could be caused by many reasons, for example an event, news or any situation than can cause this negative emotion on yourself.
How are the components of 속상하다?
We can divide this word in 3 parts, to build the meaning of this word. let’s do it.
- 속: This means inside of you, interior or heart. It refers to something inside of you, the inner yourself or your feelings.
- 상: The meaning of this morpheme is wound, injury or pain. This refers the sense of being damaged or hurt.
- 하(다). This can be translated as to do, or the action of doing the first part of the word.
How we put this all together?
If we put all the three parts together, and start reading from the en of the word, we literally get the meaning the action (하다) of being hurt (상) inside of you (속). Therefore, this can be approximated to be distressed or upset that we mentioned at beginning of the post.
