Today, I start a new section of the blog, the Korean Word of the Day. My idea is to explain the meaning of a single word in Korean, as well as the meaning of each syllable. This is more for my own benefit, but I am not even close to being a Korean teacher; in fact, I am still a beginner, and it is very challenging for me to maintain a conversation in this language. Therefore, I will have to use the internet and AI, so there could be mistakes and errors. Having said this small disclaimer, let’s go with today’s word 익숙해지다.
익숙해지다. What does this mean?
The meaning of this word is “to become accustomed to” or “to get used to”, and it is used to express the process of gradually getting used to a new situation. For example, when you get used to a new job or you move to a new place to live.
How are the components of 익숙해지다?
We can divide it into 3 parts; this way can help us to memorise this word or even learn new words related to this word.
- 익숙: This means to be familiar, something that you already know.
- 하 (하다): This part means to do.
- 지: This suffix is always used to express a change; in English, it would translate as become.
- 다: This suffix is used to say that it is a verb in infinitive form. This can be applied to any verb, and it is not relevant to the meaning of the word.
How we put this all together?
If we combine everything, it would be something like Become (지다) the action, to do (해) of being familiar (익숙). Therefore, it would be the action of becoming familiar with a new situation in your life.
Simple examples of usage.
- 오늘은 새로운 카페에 익숙해졌어요.
Today I got used to the new coffee. - 매일 아침 일찍 일어나기가 아직도 힘들지만, 이제는 조금씩 익숙해지고 있어요.
Getting up early every morning is still hard, but I’m gradually becoming accustomed to it.
