Last Friday a fire took out a government data centre in the Korean city of Daejeon. This shouldn’t have been a problem if there were more backup servers that covered this outage. However seems that this is not the case, and several government services are being interrupted or disrupted.

I am not an expert on IT, and I assume that it is very easy to talk from the outside, without knowing the details. But I cannot understand how a developed country like South Korea may have taken this possibility into consideration. From my point of view, they should have run the servers from at least 2 different physical locations.
While writing this, I see that it has been announced that resuming total operation could take up to 2 weeks, and they are working to relocate the servers to other government branches in Daegu. Even the President had to apologise for the situation and the inconveniences caused to the Korean citizens.
I am not writing this to criticise, but I hope that this crisis helps to improve in the future and avoid possible threats. At the end, we cannot forget that South Korea is a country that is technically still at War. I really wish the best to the professionals who are working hard to solve the problem and recover the systems slowly.
Anyway, they are lucky that this happened on a Friday night, with the weekend just in front, being weekend periods with less activity from businesses and less demand for this kind of request. If this had happened on a Monday morning, probably the issue would have been even worse.

Really what a shame.. 🤨🙄
Can’t believe that they don’t have backup system for this. Korea looks high technology country, but inside it’s not.
Lack of safety measure in cyber security and this kine of things too. 🤔😑
