Detected e.coli in some Korean restaurants

Recently, it was published that the Seoul city government conducted several inspections of restaurants to ensure that the health and hygiene regulations are met. Even though most of the restaurants meet the required standards, some do not and in some cases, they were even closed. Even though this could sound very bad, this is good in some way because the government is putting effort into controlling and closing the businesses that don’t follow the health regulations.

The Seoul city government inspected almost 2000 restaurants, and only 22 of them failed the inspection; however, only 15 businesses got fined, and 1 of them had to close as they revoked its restaurant license. Most of the violations were due to poor hygiene conditions, like not wearing caps and food containers not being closed properly.

Also, they took food samples, and most of them were correct. However, 7 of them were contaminated, and some of them had e.coli. All these 7 businesses got their license revoked, so they had to close. One problematic spot was the ice for the drinks, due to the poor maintenance, which can cause damage to a lot of bacteria. That should be cleaned regularly and properly. However, if I go to a restaurant or bar, I prefer to avoid Ice if I can.

As a customer, it’s hard to protect yourself, but if you wanna be completely safe and take control of what you eat, you should at home and prepare the ingredients yourself. This requires a bit more work, but it’s the best option. Also will save a bunch of money that could be useful in the future.
