Data privacy and the connected devices

Nowadays, it is very common for everything to be connected; if we go to any electronics store, we can buy the item we want with smart features and internet connectivity. This could be convenient but there are risks for everyone.

The first risk that I can think of is planned obsolescence. The manufacturer can stop the functionality of the device when they want. Just need to close the app’s servers. This way can force customers to buy a new device if wanna keep getting the same functionality.

Recently read an article, which will be attached below, about iLife devices, which apparently stop working when disconnected from the internet. This blogger shows the process that he follows to find out that his device stops working every time he blocks the internet connection with the manufacturer.

But aside from that, there are more risks, like privacy. Were are filling our house with microphones and cameras, and it is very tempting for manufacturers to try to use that information. In the best scenario for their own interest, to improve their products or market research. However, it is very common that this data is shared or sold to third parties to do whatever they want with that. Many people is not aware of this, so should be cautious.

Honestly, I would suggest avoiding these kinds of devices, but they are sometimes convenient. If it is not possible to avoid using them, try to be cautious with them and your data.
