Let’s talk about Korea and health again. Yesterday, I read an article about the abuses that Korean nurses suffer in their workplaces, and the data is scary. Over 50 per cent of the nurses interviewed stated that they have suffered abuses in the last year only.

However, for me, the worst part is that this percentage is from last year only. Assuming that this is true, this means that it is almost impossible to be a nurse in Korea and not suffer these kinds of attitudes at some point. Also, according to the data revealed, it seems that the problem is inside the hospital between colleagues and doctors. The most common abuses are verbal attacks (81%) and abuse of authority or bullying (69.3%).
Here, one important thing to understand is that in Korea, the doctors have a lot of power and very good conditions (inside and outside the hospitals). Therefore, it is possible that the mechanisms to protect nurses from bullying are not enough, and if a doctor is an abuser, it is hard for him or her to face consequences.
The Korean government, through the KNA, are releasing programs to give support to affected nurses, but for me, even though the intention is good and helpful, it is not the way. In my opinion, if a colleague abuses another, they should lose their license to work in the medical field. Until there are no contingent punishments, this situation is not going to be over. This is a very serious topic, and we should take contingent measures to finish this.
